Navy medical journals reveal all

The Royal Navy Medical Journals from the 19th century have been published today showing rum, wine and vinegar were popular medicines on board ships.

The diaries, published by the history website Ancestry.co.uk also show Victorian ship's surgeons used large doses of alcohol as part of their everyday medical practices.

One passenger aboard a ship in 1826 was advised to rub painful parts of his body with warm rum twice a day.
